Chapter Index

The next morning dawned bright the summer had passed.

A late autumn vibe quietly wrapped the campus, turning the rich green leaves a faint yellow.

Jiang Qin left his dorm with pockets in hand, still wearing the black casual outfit from yesterday.

Recently, he’s been too busy to even wash his clothes, flipping the few pieces he owns, a true rough man.

He remembered a deputy director named Cheng Peng at a previous meeting at the University of Science and Technology.

Cheng liked to boast with a cigarette, claiming during his two university years he never washed clothes; his girlfriend did it all.

    Jiang felt a bit envious.

Could girlfriends do that, what about lifelong best friends?

But with Feng Nanshu’s delicate hands, managing her own little tiger shirt might work, but these thicker jackets, he wouldn’t dare.

    “Boss, good morning.”

As Jiang entered the office, Wen Jinrui had already prepared his tea, waiting by the desk.

“Morning. Has the work report from the branch office arrived?”

Jiang removed his jacket, handing it to her.

“It’s been compiled into a file, sent to your email.”

“Great, go on. I’ll look it over myself.” Jiang logged into his email.

Since the last meeting, Wei Lanlan and Tan Qing had submitted their intern applications handled quickly under Jiang’s influence.

Therefore, they were officially on leave from school.

Wei Lanlan now stationed in the Wanzhong Mall offices took charge of brand marketing with the business department.

Tan Qing headed to Ningbo to lead the street marketing team for group-buy promotions.

Hence, Wen Jinrui became his personal secretary.

Wen Jinrui shared Wei Lanlan’s bold yet meticulous traits quite organized she didn’t make Jiang feel the change much.

It was as smooth as if he never switched secretaries.

“Boss, I saw a lovely pair of gloves at Wanzhong, please gift them to the boss’s wife.”

    “?”

Jiang looked up, spotting a pair of white cotton gloves with fluffy trim: “Why suddenly think of giving her something?”

“Autumn is here, and it’ll only get colder. The boss’s wife will need these for her electric bike rides,” said Wen softly.

“Alright, then I’ll thank her on your behalf.”

Taking the gloves, Jiang thought, Feng Nanshu barely visits twice a month why so popular?

Was it just because she’s pretty? But he considered himself quite the dashing figure as well.

Unknown to him, Wen’s sudden gift-giving took a leaf out of Wei Lanlan’s book.

According to Lanlan, being a boss’s secretary isn’t hard, but the first step was crucial winning over the boss’s wife.

Despite his tough exterior, Jiang adored his wife.

A cute gesture from her and he was totally defenseless.

Such is the wisdom of corporate life!

Unaware, Jiang finished the document then with a push, slid his chair to the window, enjoying the mild autumn morning sunshine.

With Zhihu’s operations expanding, there was a noticeable workload increase for the boss, but not much.

Especially, Su Nai recently found herself more free time.

Since website maintenance could be delegated, she didn’t need to handle it herself making her days quite leisurely.

Proof was in Jiang’s account folder “Nai’s Treasure Trove” growing daily his insight into her preferences surpassing even her own.

Meanwhile, Dong Wenhao seemed rather worn out.

Creating short videos and writing scripts was labor-intensive he seemed to enjoy the challenge though.

With dreams of being a true creator, seeing his storylines come alive in video content filled him with pride.

Hence, despite the limited current use of mobile internet and a minor forum presence, Dong passionately pursued the TikTok segment.

Lu Feiyu, though bulky and straightforward, had quite the initiative.

Following a meeting, Jiang asked him to lead content maintenance.

Lu brought in Wang Bingwen as his apprentice and chose to head the Tonight’s Headlines sector.

Some thought it was ambition to not remain under Director Dong, to manage something independently.

But Jiang and Dong didn’t agree.

    The reasoning was simple.

    Social media?

In 2009, who knew what that was or could anticipate its future dominance.

Zhihu was still primarily about student networking; TikTok and Tonight’s Headlines were just minor extras.

Lu’s move to focus on news was seen as self-marginalizing, a risky move in the corporate world, potentially leaving him sidelined permanently.

Why did he do it? Simple.

Educated in journalism, Lu’s passion was in this field descriptively referring to beauties like Liu Yiyi he sought something closer to his dream.

Jiang endorsed Lu’s decision handing Tonight’s Headlines over to him.

Through year-long grooming, Jiang felt sure about his choice.

As an executive, he preferred staff with vision fearing not their ambition but their complacency.

Lu, though raw, had shown he was ready.

    …………

In the afternoon, Wei Lanlan returned from Wanzhong to Room 208 with snacks from a brand collaboration.

She seized the moment to update Jiang on recent marketing activities.

Jiaduoji was establishing its brand image well, and Kangmailang’s new ad campaign was sweeping the forums with positive distributor feedback.

“Business people and university students differ greatly. Has anyone troubled you during your work?”

“No, boss. The entrepreneurs were quite polite, never troubled by my student status.

I found it odd but realized soon after our meeting where you publicly buttoned my coat in front of them telling them I matter to you, right?”

Jiang smiled noncommittally: “A girl in external sales always has more troubles, just take care of yourself.”

    “I will, thanks, boss.”

“No need for thanks; I’m protective naturally. Seems this method worked well I plan to button up for Tan Qing during the promotional visit too.”

Wei giggled: “I’ll call her tonight tell her to unbutton in advance.”

Jiang adopted a principled air: “Young lady, are you turning into Su Nai with those risqué jokes?”

“Boss, are you out of your mind?” From the office arose Su Nai’s fierce outburst.

Jiang spit out: “A mere programmer and you want my life?”

    “Want your favorites folder?”

    “……”

Cursing, Jiang conceded her point then shifted topics with Wei, discussing other aspects of work before driving her to the pedestrian street.

Time to consider providing company transportation; the head of Room 208 shouldn’t always squeeze into public transit.

Watching Wei depart, Jiang glanced at the sky realizing a mundane day was nearing dusk.
