Chapter 7: The True White Moonlight
by xennovelThe next morning, sunlight filled the sky.
Jiang Qin slipped out of his house, rode his bicycle around the city for a while, then entered Jizhou City Zoo.
Due to it being both a Sunday and summer vacation, the zoo entrance was swarming with people, even more crowded than a temple fair.
An hour later, Jiang Qin squeezed his way out of the zoo, nearly losing his shoes from being stepped on.
Once outside, he squatted by the entrance, took a big gulp of water, then pulled out his Nokia phone and called Guo Zihang, telling him to come over.
Guo Zihang’s home wasn’t far. After getting Jiang Qin’s call, he immediately hopped on his bike and raced over, panting all the way but in high spirits.
These days he looked forward to being summoned by Jiang Bro, always feeling like there was money to be made at any moment. But when he found Jiang Qin, he couldn’t help freezing in place.
There was Jiang Qin squatting on the ground, holding a plucked chicken in each hand.
“Jiang Bro, what are you doing?”
Jiang Qin waved the chickens. “Bought two chickens for ten bucks. Giving you one to take home for your mom to stew for you.”
Guo Zihang glanced at the zoo sign, shocked despite his confusion. “How are you bringing your own animals to the zoo?”
“Didn’t bring them, I bought them. These are for feeding the tigers. A chicken costs eleven yuan at the market, but when you buy their chickens to feed their tigers, they’re half price.”
“Then… then why aren’t you feeding the tigers?”
Jiang Qin’s eyes flashed fiercely at that. “I used my own skills to buy half-price chickens. Why should I waste them on tigers?”
Guo Zihang opened his mouth, hesitating for a while before speaking. “You’re fleecing the zoo.”
“Enough nonsense. You want it or not?”
“I want it! I love chicken!”
Guo Zihang took the proffered chicken from Jiang Qin. Gripping the chicken’s neck, his expression suddenly turned quite complex.
He could already imagine the scene of the zoo’s tigers and manager reconciling the accounts only to find they couldn’t make the numbers add up no matter what.
The tiger says: I didn’t eat it, don’t frame me!
The manager says: Don’t give me that, you definitely ate it.
The tiger says: You stole my chicken and still feel justified? I’m telling you I didn’t eat it.
The manager says: If you didn’t eat it, did the dog eat it?
“Jiang Bro, why’d you come to the zoo to buy chickens?”
“I plan to buy half-price chickens in bulk, secretly transport them out, and sell them at the market for ten yuan each. Double my money in one go.”
“Then why did you only buy two?”
“I sized up that security guard at the zoo entrance. He looks kinda tough. I don’t think I can take him, so I called you over to be my vanguard and test his combat strength.”
“No way Jiang Bro! I’m a total coward. Forget fighting, I even stutter when cursing someone out!”
“Useless thing, all you know is eating!”
Jiang Qin put his chicken in a plastic bag and took another swig from his water bottle.
Profiteering was indeed a quick way to make money, but it couldn’t be done all the time. He didn’t want trouble, just to make money while keeping his nose clean. Besides, this small-time stuff was far removed from his goal in being reborn.
Jiang Qin stood up and handed his chicken to Guo Zihang as well, telling him to bring them back. He then hopped on his bike and headed to his next stop – Jizhou City Library.
Right now he was very vexed about his first pot of gold, but none of his ideas panned out.
Damn, not having a system really made things difficult.
But even without ideas, he refused to just sit at home. Because once a person gets lazy, they just get lazier and lazier. This was the truth he’d concluded in his past life. So he decided to go to the library to find some books, see if any of them mentioned a house of gold. Maybe it would give him some inspiration.
“How to Become the Charming Man Rich Women Like”
“Effective Opening Lines Upon Meeting a Rich Woman”
“Fifteen Gentlemanly Details to Win Over Rich Women”
“The Glorious Transformation of the Third Generation Tang Monk”
“Successful Cases of Marrying into Money”
Jiang Qin picked out a few books from the humanities and social sciences section, intending to study them carefully.
To be honest, given the current situation, he felt the only shortcut to his first pot of gold was marrying into money. A young man in his prime selling his strength for money wasn’t shameful.
Jiang Qin brought a stack of books to the reading area. But before he could sit down, his gaze was suddenly drawn to the southeast corner.
Sitting there was a young lady in a fitted long dress. The small section of arm resting on the table was white as snow. Beneath dense lashes, her eyes sparkled like water. Her red lips were lush and full. Smooth long hair draped over her shoulders, glittering like pearls in the sunlight.
The girl was currently engrossed in a thick book, carefully turning the pages, eyes flashing ceaselessly, looking gentle and well-behaved.
Jiang Qin paused, a related memory seeming to be activated in his mind.
Feng Nanshu, the studious goddess of the third year class one. The aloof, unattainable belle. The true white moonlight of South City High.
It was said a car with wings picked her up and dropped her off each day, accompanied by a dedicated driver and bodyguard. Her family background was a total mystery.
Some said her dad was an international business tycoon. Others said she was an exiled princess from the capital’s inner circle. Still others said she was an illegitimate daughter who couldn’t see the light of day. In any case, all sorts of rumors abounded but none seemed credible.
But Feng Nanshu indeed had the air of an heiress. Cold and friendless, she never spoke to anyone aside from answering questions in class.
It was precisely because of this frigid, unapproachable demeanor, plus the imposing presence of her beefy bodyguards, that despite having countless admirers, no one ever dared confess to her.
Chu Siqi was already the dream girl of many, but compared to Feng Nanshu she was still a few notches inferior.
After starting university, Jiang Qin had met quite a few girls who could rival Chu Siqi. But Feng Nanshu remained a stunning existence in his memories.
Mr. Lu Xun really wasn’t lying. There truly were beauties like jade to be found in books.
But was it really Lu Xun who said that?
Jiang Qin thought about it and decided it didn’t matter. Any famous quotes you can’t remember the author of were said by Lu Xun.
At this moment, Feng Nanshu seemed to sense someone staring at her. She arched an eyebrow and cast a cool glance his way.
The instant their eyes met, her lashes trembled slightly before she quickly refocused her gaze on the book in her hands.
Truly ice-cold.
Jiang Qin gave an apt appraisal. Then he strode over and sat at the table across from her.
Reading was a tedious affair. When you couldn’t focus, raising your head to look at a beauty was not a bad choice. Reading was for making money. Looking at beauties was for reading. They were both just tools in the end. It didn’t go against his money-above-all principles.
Jiang Qin took out a book and placed it in front of him. His eyes inadvertently glanced at the book in Feng Nanshu’s hands.
“The Magical-Eyed Girl Peggy Sue”
Hm?
Shouldn’t a girl with such a frigid air be reading something like “Kafka on the Shore” that has a literary youth vibe?
How come she was reading a somewhat juvenile fantasy adventure novel?
Just as Jiang Qin was slightly dazed, the novel in front of him suddenly moved up a bit.
The originally exposed half of her face was now completely hidden, not even leaving him that pretty visage.
Jiang Qin snapped out of it and couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.
Won’t even let me look at half your face?
Ice-cold, truly ice-cold.
Jiang Qin didn’t mind. He reached out and flipped open the book in front of him.
