Chapter 155: The Eyes of the Dead

By a twist of fate, Xiao Yu and Guo Qiang arrived at the hospital.

Miao Jiancheng, the morgue security guard and reporting witness, had regained consciousness.

It was a truly tragic scene!

Last night, terrified, he fled the morgue only to be hit by a car.

He suffered a fractured thigh, four broken ribs, a mild concussion, and several abrasions.

When he awoke, he found himself lying on a hospital bed, looking dazed and ghostly pale.

This appearance wasn’t due to his injuries—it was the shock he experienced!

Xiao Yu and Guo Qiang exchanged a knowing glance.

As seasoned investigators, they immediately recognized that Miao’s reaction wasn’t feigned.

“Hello, you must be Miao Jiancheng, the morgue guard, right?”

With a warm smile, Xiao Yu replied, “I’m with the Criminal Investigation Team, handling the case of the missing body at the morgue.”

    “Ah!”

Miao shuddered as he stared at the two officers and, still in shock, asked, “Police?”

    “Yes, police!”

Wearing an unwavering sunny smile, Xiao Yu’s eyes hinted at something unusual as he prepared to employ his ‘Psychological Expert’ skills to ease Miao’s mind. “There’s no need to worry. You’re safe now. Even if ghosts exist, do you think one would dare to appear where there are so many people…”

For a full ten minutes, he continued speaking in a soothing monologue.

What was uncanny was that Xiao Yu’s words seemed to possess a mysterious power.

His tone, his smile, and his subtle gestures

gradually helped calm Miao Jiancheng, easing his terror and restoring his composure.

This wasn’t because the ‘Psychological Expert’ skill was magical,

but rather it offered genuine psychological comfort.

Through his language, expressions, and gestures, he helped steady Miao’s nerves.

“Our colleague already asked you this morning, but only briefly.”

Still smiling warmly, Xiao Yu inquired, “Could you tell me in detail what happened last night?”

    “Last night…”

Miao’s expression turned fearful again before gradually softening as he recalled, “At one o’clock, I went out on patrol—a duty required of all night shift guards. We must check each designated checkpoint.”

“Checkpoint?” Xiao Yu noted every detail.

“Our unit has installed security cameras at various spots,” Miao explained. “We carry a time-card scanner to swipe at each camera. If we miss a scan, there’s no record and our unit knows we’re slacking off!”

    Understood—it wasn’t anything new.

This outdated timekeeping method had been around for a decade or two, though mostly phased out today.

I never expected a morgue to still employ it…

“Continue,” Xiao Yu prompted with a nod.

“I first patrolled outside the morgue and found nothing amiss.”

Miao continued, “Then I entered the morgue, starting with Cold Storage Room 1 for my check-in. Room One was normal, but when I reached Room 2, I noticed something off…”

“What did you notice?” Xiao Yu asked.

    “It wasn’t exactly abnormal.”

Miao paused before adding, “The door wasn’t fully closed, leaving a wide gap… I assumed it was just a careless mistake by a night staff member. When I pushed the door open to take a closer look, I found an open refrigerated casket!”

A gap in the door—perhaps the work of a body snatcher… Xiao Yu squinted in thought.

Technically, it wasn’t a major anomaly.

But then again, if you were stealing bodies, would you be so careless?

Xiao Yu recalled previous theft cases he had solved.

Thieves generally return most items except for money—cabinets, furnishings, doors, windows…

If a home is left in complete disarray, it clearly points to an amateur!

From the scene, Xiao Yu deduced the culprit was an expert,

    one with nerves of steel.

Someone capable of staging ghostly illusions in a morgue.

This was not the handiwork of an ordinary thief.

    It was reminiscent of…

    “Grave robbers?”

Xiao Yu’s eyes suddenly lit up.

Of course—I hadn’t thought of that.

Only such individuals would dare to meddle with the dead.

They are masters at handling corpses and associated burial items.

Creating eerie illusions is their specialty.

Could it really have been their work?

If it were them, they would typically target tombs.

    So why steal a corpse?

Unless the corpse was even more valuable than those in a tomb?

    Xiao Yu narrowed his eyes.

He remembered that the female corpse in question had assets worth over twenty million in her lifetime.

    0… Flowers, please…

Indeed, she was worth more than many tombs…

“At first, I was utterly bewildered,”

Miao admitted, frowning. “Initially, I didn’t think the missing body was a big deal—I assumed a staff member had simply forgotten it. But when I saw the tear marks on the body bag, I knew something was off. I decided to go call for help. However, as soon as I stepped out of Room 2, I saw a female corpse slumped against the corridor door, right there!”

“How could you so easily tell she was… a female corpse?”

Xiao Yu fixed his gaze on Miao.

“I’ve seen many corpses before, and I know them well,” Miao replied.

Growing agitated and frightened, Miao continued, “A corpse’s skin tone is markedly different from that of a living person. Typically, it’s a ghastly pale with a bluish-gray tint. If it’s been frozen, it takes on a pale gray with subtle hints of black… But when I saw her, I was terrified. She was staring—unblinking—right at me!”

    ….0

Indeed, a corpse’s skin naturally looks that way… Xiao Yu’s expression grew grim.

    He asked merely to verify—

Was that female corpse truly what she appeared to be?

Miao’s confirmation sent a shiver down his spine.

His heart pounded as Xiao Yu’s face slowly turned pale.

If it were a genuine female corpse, then no human impersonator was involved.

But then, how was she sitting on the ground?

And how did she approach the guard in the darkness?

A chill ran through him, and goosebumps erupted all over.

    Could it really be that…

    “Wait a minute.”

Suddenly, Xiao Yu exclaimed in shock, “What did you just say? That she was staring at you? What color were her eyes?”

    “Black,” Miao stated firmly.

    “Ha!” Xiao Yu laughed.

But how could a corpse, especially one long dead, still have eyes that appear normal?

How could they still be black?

After death, the cornea gradually loses its transparency, turning cloudy and grayish-white.

Eventually, the pupils become completely obscured by the opaque cornea.

    So, a corpse’s eyes should be grayish-white—

    never black!

    ……
