Chapter Index

Lin Ying Jun stared at the Maotai in his wife’s hand.

“It doesn’t look fake, and did you notice, honey? That girl who delivered the goods just now—she was the same one who brought books for Zheng Ran last time, right? She’s dressed so sharply in that suit. It feels like she’s more of a”

Lin Xiao Li widened her eyes: “A salesperson?!”

Lin Ying Jun corrected: “Not a salesperson. A secretary.”

“That’s what I meant by secretary. Who said salesperson? You must have misheard.”

    Lin Ying Jun: “.”

Lin Xiao Li pondered: “So, does that mean the pretty girl who went into Zheng Ran’s room comes from a family in business?”

In Lin Zheng Ran’s bedroom, since he had only been back for a couple of days and hadn’t started unpacking yet, and his parents wouldn’t touch his things, the room was still packed with books on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular medicine.

When Jiang Jingshi entered, she saw the familiar scene and immediately thought of her sister, Qian Qian’s bedroom, which looked just like this.

But as she glanced at the book covers, she realized they were all medical books, different from the random mix in her sister’s collection.

“Sister, I hope my sudden visit isn’t bothering you?”

Lin Zheng Ran closed the door and smiled: “Of course not. What brings you here? Is something wrong? Feeling unwell?”

    Jiang Jingshi shook her head:

“No, since I left the hospital, I haven’t had any dizziness or confusion. Our family doctor checks on me every day, and I’m doing great.”

Lin Zheng Ran nodded: “That’s good to hear.”

He looked at the books crammed in the room and said, “Take a seat on the bed. I haven’t sorted these out yet, so there’s no space on the chairs. I’ll move them to the warehouse in a few days.”

Jiang Jingshi picked up a book: “Are all these medical books? Did you read them to study my condition?”

Lin Zheng Ran didn’t deny it—the evidence was right there:

“Your case was unusual, and time was short, so I had to quickly review past cases and research. Thankfully, it paid off.”

Jiang Jingshi scanned all the books and the room’s corners, a wave of heartache rising inside her.

This was his bedroom, filled with so many books just for her illness. How long had he been at this?

Though she had asked him about it in the hospital and guessed he hadn’t rested much that week, seeing it all laid out made Jiang Jingshi feel a deep sense of debt.

This kind of favor might take a lifetime to repay.

Lin Zheng Ran sat on the bed and saw her zoning out: “Sit down.”

Jiang Jingshi responded, set the book down, and gazed at Lin Zheng Ran with gentle affection.

Lin Zheng Ran looked back at her.

The two locked eyes for a while until he smiled.

Jiang Jingshi finally snapped back, her cheeks flushing as she said:

“I came to tell you something. I told my parents about how you cured my illness. I couldn’t hide it—they know me too well, and I always space out when we talk about you.”

Lin Zheng Ran had expected this: “It’s fine. I told you at the hospital that if your uncle and aunt asked, you could tell them.”

    Jiang Jingshi remembered that.

That day at the hospital, when they parted, Lin Zheng Ran had gone over some details with her.

Jiang Jingshi promised: “Don’t worry, my parents won’t spread it around. They know how serious this is. But once they found out you saved me, they and my grandfather want to invite you over for a visit.”

She also explained how her parents had wanted to come find him directly, but she had stopped them.

She hid nothing from Lin Zheng Ran about the whole situation.

After hearing it, Lin Zheng Ran thought about his upcoming trip:

“I might have to go away for a while on some business. Once I’m back, I should visit your uncle, aunt, and grandfather. It’ll be about ten days; I’ll contact you then for the exact time.”

Jiang Jingshi nodded with a smile: “Okay! Just go by your schedule. No need to disrupt your plans for my parents. Though, what about this trip—”

“It’s something I promised earlier. I’m going with Heqing and Lily.”

Lin Zheng Ran was always honest in relationships, except when it came to hiding that fox’s whereabouts—since she had asked him not to tell anyone.

Otherwise, he had no intention of hiding things; they would all come out eventually.

Better to be open about it than deceive.

Though Jiang Jingshi felt a small twinge of jealousy at his words, his honesty made it feel less like sneaking around.

    “Oh, I see…”

Lin Zheng Ran’s relationship with Heqing and Lily

Jiang Jingshi had a vague idea, having seen how they interacted over the years—it wasn’t just friendship. Of course, she had never had anyone investigate it.

The door suddenly knocked—it was Lin Xiao Li’s voice, cheerful from outside: “Zheng Ran? Mom cut some fruit for you two. Can I come in and bring it?”

Lin Zheng Ran replied: “Mom, just come in.”

Lin Xiao Li pushed the door open, saw the two inside, and Jiang Jingshi quickly stood to greet her: “Auntie, thank you. Let me take that.”

She reached to take the fruit plate from Lin Xiao Li.

Lin Xiao Li chuckled: “No need to be so polite. Um, Jiang…”

Lin Zheng Ran added: “Jingshi, Jiang Jingshi.”

Jiang Jingshi glanced back at Lin Zheng Ran, a shy smile on her face.

As someone experienced, especially with all the pretty girls who had visited their home, Lin Xiao Li could tell right away if someone liked her son.

Seeing Jiang Jingshi’s blush, Lin Xiao Li sighed inwardly.

Clearly, she wasn’t just a regular friend.

Lin Xiao Li set the fruit plate on the table: “Jingshi, your uncle and I have some errands, so we probably won’t be back for lunch. You two just relax here. And about those gifts at the door—they’re too many and too valuable.”

    Jiang Jingshi listened carefully.

Lin Xiao Li smiled and continued:

“We really appreciate you visiting, but it’s just that there are so many, and some are too expensive. How much must they cost? We’ll keep one or two boxes, but take the rest back. We can’t accept it all.”

Jiang Jingshi explained: “They’re not that expensive, Auntie. It’s my first time visiting, just a small gesture of respect. Please keep them.”

    “But—”

Lin Zheng Ran knew Jiang Jingshi had brought a lot—his parents weren’t used to such gifts.

Since it was already at the door, sending it back might make her overthink, especially as it wasn’t a big deal for her. So, as the one involved, he chimed in:

“Mom, don’t worry about it. You and Dad go enjoy your outing. I’ll handle this with her.”

With Lin Zheng Ran’s say, it cut short the back-and-forth, and Lin Xiao Li agreed: “Alright, you decide, Zheng Ran. Your dad and I are heading out shopping. Do you two need anything?”

Jiang Jingshi waved: “No, Auntie, you don’t have to get us anything.”

Lin Zheng Ran added: “We’re good, Mom.”

“Hehe, you two carry on. I won’t interrupt.” Lin Xiao Li laughed and left, closing the door behind her.

Lin Ying Jun was already in the living room gathering things for their outing, ready to unwind with his unemployed wife.

Lin Xiao Li walked over to her husband and gave him a look.

She sighed and whispered: “He’s definitely charmed another one. You can see it’s all about Zheng Ran.”

Lin Ying Jun had suspected as much when he first saw her—otherwise, why so many gifts? It was clear she was aiming to be part of the Lin family, just like the others:

“We’ll talk to Zheng Ran about this later. For now, let’s just go shopping. If you have interviews coming up, do you need to buy anything to prepare?”

“Yeah, a few books. The job requirements are strict, so I need to study up.”
