Chapter Index

“Did you crack the serial killer case eight years ago and the Tokyo arson murder case seven years ago?”

Kawauchi Tarō nodded and replied, “Yes, I did.”

“Why then did you hide your experience as a criminal detective and only list your position as the deputy chief of a local station? Don’t you want to be recruited by us?”

Kawauchi Tarō was baffled and suddenly realized that he had inadvertently forgotten to mention his critical past experience. Had he really become just another face in the crowd after leaving his detective role six years ago?

Reminded of his past, Kawauchi’s eyes welled up with tears as he bowed deeply to the three people before him, stood up, and apologized, “I’m sorry. It’s been so long since I’ve been a detective that I didn’t include that experience in my application. Thank you for your understanding.”

“Do you still wish to work as a detective?”

“Of course, it has always been my dream, one I thought I’d never achieve again.”

“Good, then you’re hired. Your wife, Michiko, can leave the archipelago with you.”

“Thank you so much!” Overwhelmed with joy, Kawauchi bowed repeatedly to express his gratitude.

“Don’t get too excited yet; you two can’t leave immediately because you’re infected with a super virus!”

The man in the protective suit added, causing Kawauchi to freeze.

Tears streamed down Michiko’s face as she grasped Kawauchi’s hand, “Tarō, let’s die together.”

“Don’t worry; you’re currently asymptomatic and still in the incubation period. Our company can cure you, but you’ll need to stay for treatment, so you can’t leave just yet.”

Listening to the man’s explanation, Kawauchi felt like strangling him. Why couldn’t he have just explained everything all at once instead of giving them a scare?

Despite his irritation, he continuously expressed his gratitude, “Thank you very much!”

“You’re welcome. We’re colleagues after all. This is a benefit from the company. To tell the truth, it’s rare for our recruiting station to hire such a qualified detective.”

As the person in charge at this recruitment point, Rin Feng was in high spirits today. He had not only discovered carriers of a new variant of the super virus but also recruited a relatively scarce type of worker.

These achievements could earn him a substantial reward. Leading Kawauchi and his wife to the treatment area, Rin Feng quickly warmed up to Kawauchi, suggesting the start of a budding friendship.

Although the super virus was highly contagious and deadly, detection during the incubation phase meant treatment could completely cure Kawauchi and his wife within three days.

Thanks to the antiviral drugs developed by Dream Technology, the company’s pharmaceutical branch was now selling this modified drug globally.

Despite the virus spreading only in select regions of Japan, the United States, South Korea, Australia, and parts of Europe with a high mortality rate, it had instilled fear worldwide.

China, maintaining close ties with Japan, had swiftly enacted a travel ban and quarantined all visitors from Japan upon receiving the alert from Dream Technology, effectively shielding the country from the virus.

As usual, XYZ Corporation was on a large-scale recruitment drive. Du Qiu reviewed the daily reports from each station to monitor who was being recruited under the tech giant’s banner.

Recognizing that a new society in Heaven Realm required diverse talents, Du Qiu shifted from hands-on development to leading a range of tech projects.

While verifying the reports, he contemplated utilizing his trusted aides, Star Ocean and Leng Yanran, to focus more security resources against external threats.

“Ah, a second infected person found; lucky to be alive and producing antibodies. We must understand his survival to possibly gain something valuable.”

Du Qiu was thinking when Leng Yanran interrupted, “Sir, Director Han Guoqiang from the Geological Research Institute has something important to report!”

    “Let him in.”

Han Guoqiang rushed in, not even bothering to sit, and blurted out, “Boss, we’ve simulated the submergence of the Japanese Archipelago. It predicts a catastrophic tsunami affecting areas from the continent in the west to the Hawaiian Islands in the east and Papua New Guinea in the south.

We must issue a tsunami warning immediately to prepare these areas, especially our motherland, China, because of its proximity and the potential magnitude of the tsunami.

Our initial estimates indicate that coastal lands within 50 kilometers will be affected; evacuation must start now, especially for the flat regions of the Yangtze River Delta, where the impact could extend beyond 50 kilometers!”

A chill ran down Du Qiu’s spine—could this mean a devastation of China’s coastal prime areas and the destruction of years of development?

“Director Han, is there any way to minimize the impact of the tsunami?”

Han Guoqiang shook his head, “There’s no existing effective measure.”

Du Qiu then asked, “Have you heard of any far-fetched ideas to mitigate a tsunami’s impact or know of methods that seem unworkable?”

Understanding the question, Han Guoqiang pondered before responding, “A somewhat plausible idea is to use a sono-gravitational wave generator placed along the coast that could emit waves to diminish the tsunami as it happens. However, manufacturing such a device is a massive undertaking, not something achievable short-term.”

Du Qiu slammed his hand on the desk, “I will figure out how to develop and produce this generator as soon as possible.

Let’s try this method and hope it minimizes the losses for China, though we must still issue the warning and hope for successful evacuation.

Since this method hasn’t been tested,<|vq_16859|> it’s uncertain, but it’s worth a shot. If successful,<|vq_16860|> the eastern coast, especially bustling Shanghai, won’t be devastated. After all, that’s my homeland!” Du Qiu ended with a sigh.

    Chapter Summary

After discovering they were infected with a super virus, Kawauchi Tarō and his wife faced a scary moment before being assured of a potential cure. Meanwhile, a catastrophic tsunami threatening China prompts Du Qiu to consider an untested solution to mitigate potential destruction.
