Chapter 311: Rescue in the Aftermath
by xennovelEarlier, the catastrophic disaster in Yindi claimed over 300,000 lives and left more than 600,000 people homeless. In the wake of this calamity, our Rescue Team managed to save a total of 16,700 people within one week.
However, Director Han Guoqiang of the Geological Research Institute warned that this area was highly likely to become a second fault line, meaning that if residents did not evacuate promptly, the region could end up like Central America.
After relocating to the Heaven Realm, not long after her wedding, Yuan Minhua resumed work as the Head of the Emergency Logistics Department.
“Sister Yuan, how come you didn’t even finish your honeymoon leave before rushing back to work? Didn’t Batty promise to take you on a global tour? Oh, and a stroll on Mars as well!”
Du Qiu smiled as he watched Yuan Minhua approach to deliver her report.
The Dream Rescue Team currently operates under the Emergency Logistics Department, which handles all consolidated statistical tasks.
Du Qiu established this department to coordinate the company’s material reserves and ensure the smooth operation of the Heaven Realm along with various emergency responses.
Originally, Yuan Minhua served as the vice president in charge of administration, personnel, and logistics at Dream Technology. Transferring her here was a perfect fit.
With the operation of the Heaven Realm underway, a society emerging under the aegis of a super-corporation was gradually taking shape. Du Qiu eagerly anticipated how this organizational model would evolve.
Ning Shuangshuang had once asked him if it was possible to establish a nation.
Du Qiu dismissed the idea immediately. In his view, founding a nation meant developing national and governmental systems. Although Dream Technology wasn’t one of his shareholders, he controlled 70% of its shares – essentially a one-man show.
Creating a parliamentary system, aside from potential inefficiencies, would only complicate matters further.
On the other hand, adopting an autocratic empire might draw criticism for turning back the hands of history and could even one day lead to his downfall.
Moreover, Du Qiu wasn’t one to favor dictatorship; he preferred giving his subordinates full autonomy.
Since it was originally a company, it made the most sense to run it as such.
As for the small society formed by the employees’ families, it naturally remained a subsidiary under the company’s umbrella.
Such a micro-society was far easier to control – without the company, it would amount to nothing.
In this interstellar era, no one could say for sure whether the super-corporate model would continue to align with the tides of history, but for now, it was running quite well.
Yuan Minhua laughed, “Batty took me on his private jet for a global tour – we circled the world in just one day. And yes, we did take that Mars stroll. I even collected some beautiful Martian rocks.”
“Then one day, Batty suddenly told me he had an astounding idea for research. He rushed back and dove straight into the lab.”
“Hey, what exactly is Batty researching? To think he’d leave his newlywed wife behind. Next time I see him, I’m definitely going to give him a piece of my mind.”
Du Qiu was intrigued. Before their wedding, Rein Leinar had mentioned that after marrying, he intended to step down as Global President to devote himself wholeheartedly to his research.
As for the role of Global President, Du Qiu believed it could be handed over to Liu Yaofeng.
Once, Du Qiu had asked Rein Leinar what exactly he planned to research. With a mysterious smile, Rein simply replied, “It’s top secret. I’ll explain everything once I make a breakthrough. Don’t go snooping around!”
Now, Rein Leinar had even shortened his honeymoon – a clear sign of his passion for his research.
Yuan Minhua pouted and said, “Who knows, he claimed his lifelong dream might just be within reach. If that’s the case, our honeymoon is over – I can’t be the one holding him back.”
Du Qiu chuckled, “I see Sister Yuan isn’t too happy. Just understand that he must have been struck with a brilliant idea and couldn’t wait another moment.”
“Come to think of it, delaying his research for nearly three years while I ran Dream Technology as CEO really held him back from what he truly loves – machinery.”
Du Qiu spoke fondly of Rein Leinar.
Yuan Minhua retorted, “Alright, you don’t have to speak on his behalf. I enjoy working too – my current role in the Emergency Logistics Department is genuinely engaging.”
She continued, “The Rescue Team’s performance has been outstanding. Liu Sichen mentioned that they’ve enhanced Dream Technology’s image and won more people over to the company and its products.”
Upon hearing Du Qiu’s praise, Yuan Minhua added, “I heard from Minister Haidel of the Human Resources Department that many young people around the globe are eager to join the Rescue Team. Should we consider expanding the organization?”
After a brief pause, Du Qiu replied, “We can. Starting with our current force of 500 members, let’s expand tenfold to 5,000.”
“In the future, Earth is bound to face more frequent disasters. While we might not be able to save the entire world, we should rescue as many people as we can.”
Yuan Minhua nodded thoughtfully, “Indeed, saving one life is worth more than building a pyramid. But if an ice age does descend, won’t we be unable to save everyone?”
Du Qiu sighed, “First of all, our technology can’t prevent the coming ice age, so this enormous disaster is inevitable.”
“Secondly, we can’t predict exactly how long it will be until the ice age arrives. For now, we must boost the production capacity of the Mars Living Base.”
“Many countries still refuse to believe that such a disaster will occur. Therefore, we’ll adopt a real estate strategy on Mars to attract certain nations or organizations to purchase properties.”
“With the resources they exchange for these properties, we can accelerate the construction of Mars Living Bases, which will be highly beneficial for relocating more people to Mars in the long run.”
Yuan Minhua asked with concern, “Won’t this give wealthy nations or individuals an escape hatch from the disaster, leaving most poor or ordinary people to perish?”
Du Qiu replied, “By selling Mars Living Bases to the wealthy, we’ll secure the resources needed to build more bases. With additional bases, we can accommodate the relocation of ordinary people. Eventually, we’ll even offer Mars properties for individual purchase.”
“As for the truly impoverished, we will certainly engage in charitable efforts, but we simply can’t help every poor person in the world.”
“Charity is part of the job of your Emergency Rescue Department. For those we manage to save, we’ll let them decide whether they want to relocate to Mars.”
“I believe that anyone rescued by us is, at the very least, destined to have a connection with Dream Technology.”
“Since we know we can’t save everyone, letting fate take its course is the best option.”
As one of the founding veterans of the company and the future head of these affairs, Du Qiu felt compelled to explain his ‘fate theory’ to Yuan Minhua to prevent any misunderstandings.
After all, Dream Technology is a company that must shoulder its social responsibilities and generate the necessary revenue and resources.
Although Dream Technology has entered the interstellar era and resources seem plentiful, we still need enough robots for mining – a process that takes time.
Besides, robots themselves are part of the resource conversion process and require time to be manufactured.
“With so many people in the world, every individual saved by the Rescue Team is a rare mark of destiny, isn’t it?”
Yuan Minhua cheerfully inquired, “Understood, I’ll approach our rescue work with a rational mindset. But with such a vast disaster, don’t you think our Rescue Team’s 5,000 members might be too few?”
“I mean, the figure of 5,000 is an expansion based on our current 500. Once these 5,000 are fully trained and gain rescue experience, we can expand even further.”
“I’ll leave the decision in your capable hands – just make sure to submit your proposal at the monthly office meeting on time.”
After Yuan Minhua departed with a cheery air, Han Guoqiang soon arrived.
“Boss, we’ve simulated the location and length of the second fault line!”
