Chapter 330: Spider Car Enigma
by xennovelChapter 330: Spider Car
Is there a way to escape from above?
As long as you remain above the camera’s angle of view.
That’s common knowledge.
Surveillance cameras are typically mounted high, capturing images from above.
If you get above their view – the camera is effectively blind.
Walk beneath them, and they won’t see you.
So how can this be done?
By using a hoist, a lift, a Spider Car, or a high-altitude work platform… the options are many.
Suppose that at the time of the crime there was a blind spot in the surveillance.
Imagine a vehicle parked in a narrow side alley… atop another vehicle.
The assailant employed a method to render the victim helpless.
Then used the vehicle’s ‘mechanical lifting arm’ to extract the victim – could that really work?
The deduction holds up!
After all, Xiao Yu had encountered a similar case before.
The suspect had used a high-altitude work platform to hoist a corpse.
It was suspended in front of a residential window to startle onlookers.
Because of the height, the community’s surveillance couldn’t capture the method.
Eventually, Xiao Yu detected traces of the high-altitude equipment on the road outside the compound and followed the clues.
But then…
At that time, the police had quickly arrived at the scene right after the incident.
Now, no traces remain.
Five years on, any evidence would have long vanished.
So what use is Xiao Yu’s deduction?
It’s invaluable!
Knowing the exact method employed allows investigators to trace every clue step by step.
Soon thereafter, Xiao Yu, along with Guo Qiang and He Li, arrived at the second crime scene with Zhao Changshan and his team.
Then the group proceeded to the third scene where Zhou Tinghu and others were stationed.
Xiao Yu began analyzing all three crime scenes.
He deduced one likely possibility: the culprit used high-altitude equipment in the commission of the crime.
Female convict Feng Xiuyun was brought to the third scene.
But why bring her here?
Because this was her home.
Years ago, when her period started, her sister had left the house.
While on an errand to buy sanitary pads at the supermarket, something went terribly wrong…
Three years later, Feng Xiuyun returned.
Tears streamed down her face as she knelt on the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.
Even seasoned detectives like Zhao Changshan and Zhou Tinghu, with their long histories of casework,
were deeply pained by the scene.
For He Li, who was used to dealing with corpses, even she couldn’t help but sigh and comfort Feng Xiuyun.
Everyone present knew what had happened.
Feng Xiuyun had ended her sister’s life—simply wanting to leave this world together with her.
The difference lay in who turned off her sister’s ventilator.
One was a case of legal euthanasia; the other, an act of unlawful murder.
Although three years earlier she was a suspect in an attempted murder case to avenge her sister,
her crime ultimately didn’t stick, and she nearly got caught herself.
In many ways, Feng Xiuyun was just a pitiable woman.
And so, from the moment Xiao Yu removed her handcuffs,
even though she was now a convict,
nobody bothered to reapply them.
Everyone knew Feng Xiuyun wasn’t going anywhere…
…
“It’s been five years. It’s all too long—I barely remember what happened back then,”
Feng Xiuyun, seated outside the community, stared blankly at a residential building and a familiar window. “I just remember that when my period started, I was in agony. We didn’t have any sanitary pads at home; my sister went downstairs to buy some, and then…”
“It was September 19th,”
Xiao Yu looked at her and asked, “With temperatures between 19 and 25 degrees that night, wasn’t your window open at home?”
“I think so…”
Feng Xiuyun recalled and nodded, “Yes, the window was open—I was the one who opened it.”
Xiao Yu added, “The police report states that you later mentioned your sister went downstairs around 11 to 11:30 PM, right?”
Holding a tablet, Xiao Yu glanced over the case file and continued, “In a residential area at that hour, it should’ve been very quiet outside. But… do you remember hearing any unusual sounds? Like the noise of vehicles, some machinery, or a mechanical hum?”
“Um…”
Feng Xiuyun strained to remember, fully aware that Xiao Yu was on the case.
Some details had to be recalled; they were crucial to her sister’s case.
After a long pause, her eyes suddenly lit up. “I remember now. There was a sound—first a loud clang, followed by a continuous wailing.”
“Oh?”
Xiao Yu squinted and asked, “How did that impression lock in so deeply?”
It must be noted that such sounds are the hardest to recall.
They aren’t words or images, so they tend to fade from memory.
If someone manages to remember them, isn’t that a good sign?
“Not really,”
she admitted. “Even a slight error or discrepancy in a case could misdirect the entire investigation, wasting time and effort.”
Then he murmured, “0… please, fresh flowers…”
Such mistakes could lead the investigation astray.
That’s why Xiao Yu had to nail down every detail.
“Because back then… I had my period!”
A faint blush appeared on Feng Xiuyun’s face. “When a woman is on her period, she gets so irritable—everything seems wrong. I remember it clearly because a quiet night was shattered by a sudden crash, and then the wailing went on for what felt like half a minute or even a full minute. I wanted to shout, to curse, so I rushed to the window to see if someone was tampering with something—but there was nothing!”
Xiao Yu turned to He Li, who nodded in agreement.
Being a woman herself, He Li understood Feng Xiuyun’s account all too well.
Women during their periods can be especially volatile.
Especially on that fateful night when Feng Xiuyun’s sister went missing; the events must have etched themselves into her memory.
………………..
“Phew!”
Xiao Yu looked at Zhao Changshan and said, “Boss, bring over a few high-altitude work platforms, Spider Cars, and lift trucks—one of each.”
Zhao Changshan: ???
He wondered, ‘What on earth is the kid planning?’
A few hours later, exactly one of each specialized vehicle appeared before them.
They all waited until night fell, when the silence was almost deafening.
Xiao Yu instructed Feng Xiuyun, “Close your eyes and listen closely.”
“Mm,” she agreed, shutting her eyes.
Xiao Yu motioned toward the nearby road.
First came a high-altitude work platform.
It activated, its four hydraulic legs slowly lowering to the ground.
Thud—a muffled sound followed.
The legs locked the platform firmly in place.
Then the platform began to ascend slowly, emitting a continuous wailing sound.
Xiao Yu asked, “Is that the sound you remember?”
“It sounds similar, but…”
With her eyes still closed, Feng Xiuyun strained to recall before finally shaking her head, “No!”
Xiao Yu then ordered, “Next one.”
He directed his command at the second Spider Car.
Soon after, the four legs of the Spider Car touched down.
Clang.
A crisp, booming sound echoed.
Suddenly, Feng Xiuyun’s expression shifted, though she remained silent.
The Spider Car’s high-altitude mechanical arm slowly ascended, emitting its signature wailing hum.
Feng Xiuyun’s facial muscles twitched as she quickly exclaimed, “That’s it! Yes, that’s exactly the sound!”
A stern look darkened Xiao Yu’s face.
How can someone simply vanish into thin air?
Is that really your modus operandi?
“Damn it.”
