Chapter Index

Hmm, Ranran told me all about the day student arrangements. I discussed it with his dad, and we think it’s fine. We’ve already signed the papers.

Jiang Jingshi sat in her office with a smile: “Good, I’ve confirmed that you two have agreed, so I’ll continue processing the procedures for Lin Zheng Ran.”

“No problem, teacher. Thanks for your hard work.”

Jiang Jingshi glanced at her colleague busy across the room and covered her mouth to whisper: “Auntie, this is just a small thing, not much trouble. I’ll hang up now. Bye.”

    “Hmm?”

The call ended abruptly in confusion, and only after a long pause did Lin Xiao Li react on the other end.

The tone of that last sentence, that mature and pleasant voice—it had to be Xiao Jingshi…

    Ranran’s counselor is Xiao Jingshi!

So, on the same morning, Lin Zheng Ran also received a call from his mom.

She was full of shock, shocking her for the whole year:

“Ranran? What’s going on here? How did Xiao Jingshi become your counselor? Does that mean you’re dating your counselor now? Are young people these days playing it that bold?”

Lin Zheng Ran picked up the phone and had to explain briefly, adding a reminder: “Mom, Jingshi is just the counselor. We don’t have homeroom teachers in university.”

“Oh, I see.” Lin Xiao Li paused on the call before retorting: “What’s the difference? It’s still like a teacher-student thing!”

“Of course there’s a fundamental difference because Jingshi is the counselor, not a homeroom teacher.” He teased his mom on purpose.

“You’ve said that once already! And it doesn’t make any difference at all!”

In the end, the day student arrangements for the four of them went through despite some bumps.

Jiang Jingshi had already given up her rented house.

On Wednesday, everyone moved their things to the new home.

Except for a certain little fox.

Because Han Wenwen had said in the dorm two days earlier: “Hey, Xiao Qingqing and Lily, since we’ve been out shopping with Auntie all last week and didn’t go back to the rental house in the small town to pack, I need to head back tomorrow to sort things out. I’ll tell Jiang Jie about it later.”

Heqing asked: “Are you going back alone to pack? We could all go help—it’s quicker with more people.”

Lily suggested: “If there’s a lot of stuff, it’s best to hire a moving company.”

Han Wenwen grimaced, seeming to have her own plans, and waved it off: “No need for a moving company or everyone to go. I don’t have that much at the rental house—it’ll fit in one big package. Brother Zheng Ran and I can handle it tomorrow. You all don’t need to worry.”

Heqing asked again: “Are you sure you don’t need help? We don’t have much else going on these days.”

“Really, really!” The little fox nodded.

As Lily was packing, she suddenly stopped and turned to Han Wenwen with a wary look: “Wait a minute, did I just hear something off? What do you mean ‘you and Brother Zheng Ran can handle it’? Is Zheng Ran going with you tomorrow?”

Han Wenwen kept her composure: “Yeah, it might take me longer alone, but with Brother Zheng Ran helping, it’ll be easy.”

Lily teased: “You sly fox! Listen to yourself—first you say you don’t need help, then you say you need Zheng Ran. You’re just making an excuse to spend a day alone with him, aren’t you?”

Han Wenwen’s little scheme was exposed, and she blinked her bright fox eyes: “No way! I don’t think like that!”

Lily flushed and shouted: “Liar! Your expression gives you away! Those sparkling eyes won’t fool me!”

“Wenwen~” Heqing caught on and gave her a jealous glance.

Seeing Heqing’s jealous look, Han Wenwen quickly hugged her: “Oh, alright, I’ll explain to you two. Actually, tomorrow I have some personal business, so Brother Zheng Ran has to be there.”

Heqing asked curiously: “What kind of personal business?”

Lily rolled up a book and held it against Han Wenwen’s neck: “Spill everything!”

Han Wenwen laughed: “Well, when Jiang Jie called my hometown about the day student stuff, my uncle and aunt asked about it. I said I was moving out with my boyfriend, so they want to come see.”

Lily lowered the book: “Your uncle is your guardian, right? I’ve never met him before.”

Han Wenwen linked arms with Heqing and smiled: “Ever since middle school when I became independent, they’ve been pretty busy. They’ve invited me home for holidays a few times, but I didn’t really want to go, so we don’t see each other much. We still chat on the phone occasionally though.”

Lily knew Han Wenwen’s family situation was unique and nodded seriously: “If that’s the case, it’s a special situation.”

Han Wenwen narrowed her eyes and held up a finger: “Of course, I do want to spend a day alone with Brother Zheng Ran, so I won’t deny that entirely.”

Lily clicked her tongue: “Sly fox.”

Heqing watched Han Wenwen’s expression and noticed something off.

She felt like Wenwen wasn’t as happy as usual today.

Lily crossed her arms: “Anyway, since that’s how it is, Zheng Ran can go with you for the day, but you two have to be back by evening. No staying out overnight.”

“Got it, it’s just moving— we’ll be back in a day. So, if Xiao Qingqing and Lily agree, I’ll tell Brother Zheng Ran?”

Heqing whispered: “Wenwen, is there anything else?”

Han Wenwen looked puzzled: “Anything else? No, that’s all.”

    “Okay then.”

Han Wenwen said happily: “Then I’ll go make the call!”

With that, she grabbed her phone and cheerfully left the dorm to call Lin Zheng Ran.

Lily wondered in the dorm: “Why does she need to go outside to make a call?”

Heqing watched Han Wenwen’s back with a thoughtful expression.

Once away from the dorm, Han Wenwen’s face fell a bit. She opened her phone and looked at the photo her uncle had sent.

The photo showed a thin woman lying in a hospital bed, barely alive, her once-pretty face now ravaged by illness.

She was alone in the room.

Han Wenwen gritted her teeth, her eyes full of anger and pity.

The message from her uncle read: “Wenwen, we found your mom. The hospital called me recently about her condition. She’s in bad shape—they say she doesn’t have much time left. When I visited, she said she wants to see you one last time.”

Han Wenwen had replied: “I won’t see her. Whether she lives or dies has nothing to do with me.”

On Wednesday, at the gate of Qingbei University.

Lin Zheng Ran left his dorm and arrived at the gate, only to find Han Wenwen already there, squatting on the ground and staring at the grass in a daze.

It was unusual for her to arrive so early—normally, even if she came early, she’d hide until he appeared, then suddenly jump out and hug him.
