Chapter 413: Adding Peculiar Knowledge (Update 7)

Xiao Yu silently stared at He Li.

He watched her collect the corpse pieces onto a tray.

    Then, they were weighed!

Next, she placed each set of internal organs on the scale.

After that, He Li began dissecting the corpse chunks with her scalpel, scissors, and tweezers…

The sound of scissors slicing through flesh was unnerving, sending shivers down one’s spine.

But the most terrifying part was…

As He Li carried out her work…

she was so engrossed that her eyes sparkled.

What can I say? Is this really the basic practice of a forensic doctor? Xiao Yu thought to himself.

Wang Cheng, witnessing He Li’s live autopsy for the first time, covered his mouth in shock.

    “Step aside and vomit.”

He Li looked up calmly at Wang Cheng, then pointed to a nearby trash can.

Wang Cheng dashed over, crouched down, and clutched the trash can as he began retching.

    “Hehe…”

Laughing and shaking her head, He Li glanced at the composed Xiao Yu and remarked, “So you’re thinking of taking on an apprentice?”

Clearly, Wang Cheng—a complete newbie—was just dead weight.

Besides, what kind of existence is Xiao Yu, anyway?

    Taking on an apprentice?

    “A relationship connection, but…”

Xiao Yu cast a glance at the vomiting Wang Cheng and said, “If he can last two years, he might make a good cop!”

He Li paused, then couldn’t help but look again at the retching Wang Cheng.

It was the first time she had seen Xiao Yu place so much faith in someone.

“But what if he doesn’t make it?” she asked curiously.

“Then he should quietly leave the police force and live as an ordinary person.”

Xiao Yu smiled and said, “Not everyone is cut out to be a police officer.”

Many departments only offer internships lasting from three to six months.

So why does a police internship last a whole year?

Because that period alone weeds out fifty percent of the probationary officers.

Among the survivors, another ten percent end up in administrative roles!

As Xiao Yu said, not everyone can become a policeman.

Lack the smarts, the strength, or the mental fortitude… they just aren’t suited for this line of work.

Sometimes, eliminating them is really for their own good.

It’s about taking responsibility for their health and lives!

    “True enough…”

He Li nodded, smiling at her little junior, “Not everyone is as weird as you!”

Xiao Yu rolled his eyes, “Come on, enough already. Besides, if I’m considered a monster, I’d have no friends!”

What’s wrong with being a monster?

You want my rice or something?

    “Haha!”

He Li burst into laughter; she knew her junior was only pretending – he wouldn’t really be angry.

But soon, she wiped her smile away and, with a strange expression, pointed to the corpse pieces on the autopsy table, “There’s a problem.”

“What problem?” Xiao Yu asked, his curiosity piqued.

He did indeed possess the ‘Medical Expert’ ability.

However, not having performed an autopsy himself didn’t mean he could diagnose every issue just by looking.

    “Weight.”

As he said this, He Li’s expression grew even stranger. “There are only seven pieces, each with a different weight.”

    “How is that possible?”

    Xiao Yu doubted his ears.

The information was so overwhelming his mind almost shut down.

Twenty pieces of corpse chunks weighing five pounds each?

Thirty pieces weighing one pound each?

    How could that be?

Remember, these were severed from a human body.

How did she manage to get some of the pieces nearly identical in weight?

Even professional butchers can’t guarantee that the meat carved from livestock comes out perfectly measured.

He Li, equally baffled, handed Xiao Yu her autopsy record.

Xiao Yu skimmed it, recalling the earlier weighing process.

Finally, he reached the weighing records.

Out of twenty pieces, nearly ten weighed around five pounds each.

The weight variation was no more than an ounce.

Likewise, the thirty pieces were consistently around one pound each.

Only the skull, internal organs, and a few special parts showed significant weight differences among the seven pieces.

    “Hiss!”

Xiao Yu gasped in shock, utterly perplexed, “How is this even possible?”

    “I don’t know,”

He Li admitted, shaking her head; this puzzle was beyond her understanding.

Keep in mind, a corpse is originally a single entity.

You must logically divide that whole weight.

Every body part differs due to variations in muscle density and bone structure.

Expecting to determine size and weight differences merely by sight is nothing short of fantasy.

While the two seasoned investigators were baffled,

a nearly retching Wang Cheng, his face pale, wiped his mouth and timidly asked, “Could it be that the murderer previously dismembered corpses, and by estimating the weight of each body part from past experience… managed to do this?”

    “Hmm?”

Both Xiao Yu and He Li fixed their stares on Wang Cheng.

    “Uh?”

Unnerved by their looks, Wang Cheng cautiously asked, “I—I didn’t say anything wrong, did I?”

“Just keep to your own business.”

He Li sighed and smiled at Xiao Yu, “Smart kid!”

    “I thought so too.”

Xiao Yu smirked at Wang Cheng, “Promising!”

    “Haha!”

After his master’s compliment, Wang Cheng grinned stupidly.

His face lit up with excitement, like that of a two-hundred-pound child.

He knew this move might draw attention—arguably the most impactful one yet.

    “The possibility is quite high.”

Squinting at the corpse pieces, Xiao Yu mused, “Did the murderer frequently handle corpses in the past?”

    “Yes.”

He Li nodded, then shook her head, “But that doesn’t add up. The ones who most frequently deal with bodies are only two types: doctors and crematorium staff. Even forensic doctors wouldn’t dismember a body merely to weigh its parts, don’t you think?”

Xiao Yu thought, “How should I know? Once I catch the murderer, I’ll turn him over to the state and let researchers reveal the answer…”

Meanwhile, Wang Cheng sat there dazed; his mind had completely frozen—he was never known for his high IQ.

    “Any other discoveries?”

After mulling it over, Xiao Yu urged, “If you’re stumped, let it be for now.”

He Li continued, “He’s treating the corpse like building blocks to construct a house.”

Pointing at the corpse pieces, she added,

    “I noticed that too.”

Xiao Yu remarked, “Building blocks aren’t exactly an adult’s plaything; they’re more for kids. This suggests the murderer… has a playful heart and an immature mind.”

    “One more thing,”

He Li pondered seriously, “the victim’s toenails.”

    “What about them?”

Xiao Yu frowned and glanced at the victim’s feet.

“The toenails were completely intact after being pried off.”

He Li explained, “It was as if the murderer was careful not to damage them!”

That detail was a bit too gruesome… Xiao Yu smirked.

Could someone really be so perverse as to collect people’s toenails?

Once again, peculiar knowledge was added to the collection!

    …Tongue…

    Chapter Summary

Xiao Yu and He Li investigate a bizarre autopsy where corpse pieces are weighed with uncanny precision. Wang Cheng, witnessing his first live autopsy, is overwhelmed while the trio debates the possibility of the murderer having prior dismembering experience. Amid discussions on police training and the nature of forensic work, they analyze the oddly measured corpse fragments and even note the victim’s untouched toenails, hinting at a playful yet immature killer. Their discussion raises more questions about criminal behavior and forensic accuracy.
