Chapter 666: Web of Chaos
by xennovelSister is actually pretty formidable, isn’t she…
When nearly all of Flame City was shrouded by that enormous human spider web, Lu Xin took a deep breath.
He stood right in the middle of the street, looking up with satisfaction. With the web acting as a central barrier, Flame’s violent forces were cut off. No matter how many law enforcement teams or lower-level Ability Users they had dispatched around the city, they couldn’t reach their targets quickly enough. This meant that the free-spirited club members enjoyed much greater safety.
Most importantly, the people of the city now knew exactly who was behind this.
So when the final mission handover comes, could Dracula—even with his thick skin—still compete with me?
Of course; that latter reason was only secondary.
As he continued down the street, he noticed that the chaos had diminished considerably.
Some ongoing pollution had been forcibly halted.
And many of the frenzied individuals had been frightened by that enormous human spider web.
They stood in dumbfounded silence, heads tilted upward, trembling as they stared at the web draped across the street.
In a maddened city, sometimes only harsh measures will do.
Once Lu Xin was convinced that the city’s order had utterly collapsed, he knew he had only one efficient option left.
The massive web spun by Sister could effectively quell the street chaos.
Yet, through his senses, he still detected many pockets of fearsome pollution within the city.
Some areas had become so heavily contaminated that even Sister’s web couldn’t penetrate, creating a clear boundary. Others were hidden away in homes or inside massive buildings.
Flame’s pollution erupted simultaneously, infiltrating every layer of the city.
But Sister could only block the pollution plainly visible under the Red Moon.
Now, what about him…
Lu Xin’s mind raced until, all of a sudden, he looked up sharply as a realization struck.
……
……
“Report, report…”
Not long ago, everyone in the Underground Base had been staring in disbelief at the numbers on the screen.
Moments earlier, the surging pollution process had been halted by some unconventional, audacious invaders. Ground forces were dispatched to clear things up one by one, but before many “arrival” reports could come in, the data suddenly plummeted.
45%
In an instant, it dropped to 45%, even as another anomalous pollution reading surged.
7%
What kind of pollution could instantaneously affect 7% of the people in Flame?
Amid the shock, the Secretary burst into the meeting room and reported loudly, “There’s an unidentified human-shaped spider web suspended over Flame City, and its coverage is rapidly expanding. Our ground forces have been almost entirely disrupted, unable to reach their designated positions in time. Even… even several helicopters have been caught by the web and lost contact…”
Silence fell around them.
Even without the Secretary’s warning, they could see that nearly half the screen was overtaken by that bizarre web.
The surveillance footage revealed twisted faces pressed right up against the lens…
“How could it be? I thought they were just a scattering of loose elements…”
The Hell Designer froze for several heartbeats before slamming the table, “Could it be they have another commander?”
“Could it be that they deliberately arranged this attack pattern and connected it with that spider web?”
“……”
“Now isn’t the time for such talk, is it?”
Amid the shock, someone cried out, “The entire plan is stalling! What do we do now?”
“Don’t panic…”
The Hell Designer pounded the table again, his face set in determination as he fixed his gaze on a particular screen.
It showed the central area of the stadium.
Clenching his teeth, he made a resolute decision: “Inform them—it’s time to release it…”
Under his watchful eye, the Secretary quickly placed a call. In the stadium, someone answered and dashed over to the host, murmuring something quietly. The host, expressionless, simply nodded before raising his hands. A low murmur of prayer fell silent as every eye turned toward him.
Slowly, everyone raised their hands high.
Beneath their bodies, a kaleidoscope of glass-like light began to converge toward the center.
Their figures grew thinner and their eyes reddened.
Yet, the air above their heads became increasingly distorted, almost forming a bizarre shape.
“Thud…”
Abruptly, that strange mass of air contracted sharply.
In the next moment, the entire city’s Mental Power shuddered violently.
Immediately, back in the Underground Base, the pollution metric on the screen leaped from 45% to 51%.
Seven or eight seconds later, another “thud” resounded.
The city’s Mental Power trembled violently once again.
The pollution index then skyrocketed from 51% straight to 60%.
Everyone held their breath, eyes wide as they stared fixedly at the rising pollution progress.
Only the Hell Designer remained uneasy, quickly glancing at a few glass cases positioned on his desk.
……
……
“Thud…”
At that exact moment, Lu Xin abruptly halted in his tracks.
He had intended to help Sister cover the areas left exposed and completely quell the chaos,
but then he suddenly heard a heavy, peculiar heartbeat.
It was an eerie sound.
It didn’t feel real at all—it resonated directly in his mind.
In that moment, an overwhelming desire surged within him, as if something he had longed for appeared instantly—a prize worth sacrificing his life and everything he possessed.
Yet, for Lu Xin, the sensation vanished in a blink.
But he quickly realized that for others, it wasn’t so simple. Those trapped beneath the web began to sense a reawakening force; areas not yet subdued surged in intensity, their power seemingly magnified several notches.
“What is this thing?”
A look of astonishment crossed Lu Xin’s face as he briskly advanced, climbing up a high-rise along the wall.
Looking out, he saw a burst of white light rising from the city center in the distance.
The dazzling light was almost blinding.
More importantly, within that white glow, countless blood vessels surged upward, intertwining into a gigantic heart. It then contracted fiercely before expanding abruptly, channeling an enormous burst of Mental Power throughout the city.
“Thud…”
As he pondered this, he heard that colossal heartbeat once more.
In the distance, engulfed by that brilliant white light, a massive heart was contracting violently.
Each contraction unleashed an endless wave of Mental Power.
The force was so immense that even the spider web swayed in mid-air, stretching outward like a drawn bowstring.
Sister scrambled atop the center of the web as if swinging on a swing.
Squinting his eyes toward the stadium, Lu Xin noticed the black particles in his vision trembling subtly.
“Swoosh!”
He suddenly bolted forward.
His body sprinted to an adjacent wall, then dashed upward along it for several strides before somersaulting onto the human spider web. He then raced through the mid-air expanse in a straight line, charging directly toward the stadium.
At the same time, he lowered his head to glance at his own shadow beneath the web…
The higher he ran, the larger his shadow grew below.
He could even see a pair of blood-red eyes staring back at him from within the dark silhouette.
It was almost as if they were questioning him.
“You’re right. This city definitely needs a terrifying overlord…”
Murmuring to his shadow, Lu Xin said, “So, are you ready?”
“Hahaha…”
A hollow laugh suddenly echoed through the air.
Father’s mood, unusually uplifted, soared. Although he had initially felt a twinge of resentment upon seeing Sister’s astonishing web, now he couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement.
It was the thrill of a long-awaited opportunity finally presenting itself—a dream on the brink of fulfillment…
As his excitement grew, Lu Xin’s shadow deepened, twisting and surging, gradually expanding its reach.
“Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!”
Lu Xin dashed, climbing across rooftops and leaping like a bird until he reached the edge of the stadium. Then, like a phantom, he swiftly scaled the stadium’s exterior, reaching its top as he gazed into the dazzling interior.
The pristine, white stadium contained hardly any shadows.
Yet, amid Father’s laughter, an unseen surge of Mental Power shook the stadium as light bulbs shattered in a burst of sparks.
Inside, darkness deepened until only one massive searchlight remained behind Lu Xin.
That colossal searchlight was so intense that anyone standing before it could feel its searing heat.
But as one approached, Lu Xin’s shadow grew infinitely large,
completely engulfing the entire stadium.
Consequently, countless fervent, devoted believers inside began to panic, heads lifting in alarm.
They stared up at the gaunt figure towering high above them.
……
……
“Greedy and delusional…”
The gaunt figure was distant, yet at that moment a heavy, frenzied voice resounded in their hearts.
“Have you ever tasted the flavor of terror?”
