Chapter Index

What does it feel like for a twenty-six-year-old human to be collectively rejected by six six-month-old wolf pups? Today, Xia Qing got a taste of that firsthand.

After gathering medicinal herbs on Hill Fifty-Five, Xia Qing complained to the Alpha about the wild boars overrunning the valley. With a single command from the Alpha, five wolf pups of varying colors, led by its own cub, raced down the hillside toward her. Before Xia Qing could figure out how to pet any of them, the six little rascals zipped right past her and sprinted for the valley’s exit.

The Alpha glanced at Xia Qing, silently telling her to keep up.

Are they taking the pups to hunt wild boar? Is that why there are always so many left in the valley—for the wolf cubs’ training? Xia Qing felt like she’d just uncovered a hidden truth.

Without hesitation, she threw her backpack on and chased after them at top speed.

Noticing her improved pace, the wolves stopped holding back for her and broke into a full sprint. And then—

    Xia Qing fell behind.

By the time she made it, huffing and puffing, to the bamboo grove north of Hill Fifty-Two, she found six wolf pups and eight adult wolves waiting on the hillside, all watching her with undisguised disdain.

Picking up on Xia Qing’s exhaustion, the Alpha let her rest a while before they headed into Hill Forty-Nine.

Xia Qing knew exactly why the pack was waiting. Hill Forty-Nine was human territory, and with so many wolf pups in tow, the pack wasn’t about to risk it without her.

Leading fourteen wolves, Xia Qing reached Wild Boar Valley in Section Three of Hill Forty-Nine, where Er had already arrived from Section Three, waiting on the slope.

The wolf pups all bounded over to greet Er, their excitement obvious even from a distance.

Watching the joyful reunion, Xia Qing felt envious and quietly spoke to the Alpha: “Queen, the human settlements are too close to here. Please don’t let the wolves howl, or you’ll attract unwanted attention. It could get dangerous.”

The Alpha understood immediately and let out a low howl. Obediently, the wolf pups circling Er leapt into Wild Boar Valley, forming teams of three and starting to hunt wild boar as big as themselves.

Clearly, this wasn’t their first group hunt. The wolf pups worked together seamlessly, killing two boars in no time and tucking in for a meal.

Xia Qing asked the Alpha, “Queen, besides that little one with the golden eyes, which others are yours?”

The Alpha just stared into the valley at the playing cubs, ignoring her question.

Xia Qing quietly studied the adult wolves. Of the four mother wolves she’d once seen with the Alpha for health checks, only two were here. Crippled Wolf and Handsome Huge Wolf were missing. Most likely, the wolf pups here were just part of the Northern Wolf Pack’s new generation this year.

There must be others roaming elsewhere.

After devouring the organs and belly meat of their two kills, the six wolf pups teamed up again—this time targeting a massive boar weighing over seven hundred pounds. Leading the charge was the Alpha’s cub, noticeably sturdier than the others.

Now that’s what you call guts!

None of the nine adult wolves watching tried to stop them. Instead, they all stood up, pacing the ridgeline above the pups, ready to jump in if things got dangerous.

But for Xia Qing, there were more pressing matters. She headed into the valley and dragged the two wolf-picked boar carcasses back up to the ridge.

After checking the quality, she found one Yellow Lantern and one Red Lantern boar. With practiced hands, Xia Qing chopped off the gnawed parts and packed the rest into bags.

This meat the wolves turned their noses up at? Humans love it. The Green Lantern pork could be sold to Territory One. The Yellow Lantern would go back for Er Yong. Tonight, she’d finally get her fill of delicious pork.

    “Thud, thud, thud—”

Just as Xia Qing was about to haul the boars back to the territory, a stampede thundered through the valley. Turning, she spotted a whole herd of wild boars charging toward her from the other side.

So the piglet that ran off earlier brought reinforcements!

The boars’ panicked squeals and furious roars echoed all the way to the human territory. There, Tang Huai happened to be checking in with Hu Zifeng. “Maniac, what’s going on out there? You killing pigs on Hill Forty-Nine?”

“Yep, we’re butchering pigs.” Hu Zifeng couldn’t see what was happening in Section Three, but Xia Qing had already given him the heads-up—it was the wolf pack on a wild boar hunt.

Tang Huai immediately called back, “Why today?”

It was a good question—one Hu Zifeng, who was busy calming Little Five, also wanted answered.

Zhang San joined in on the channel. “Hu Zifeng, are you going after Green Lantern boars?”

“Third Brother, we’ve got too many wild boars in the valley—need to thin the herd. Don’t know yet if any are Green Lanterns.”

“Alright, if you get any, I’ll trade you for some.”

    “Sounds good, Third Brother.”

“Captain Hu, if you get any Yellow Lantern, could I trade for a few pounds?” Qi Fu chimed in.

“Bro Zifeng, I want some Yellow Lantern pork too.” Wen Nengjie was online as well. After a month of hard work, selling grain and spinach seeds from Territory Seventeen, the brothers finally had some savings—enough for a Yellow Lantern feast.

Hu Zifeng could only shake his head…

“Alright, if there’s any Yellow Lantern, I’ll let everyone know.”

    “Buzz.”

Just as Xia Qing handed the boars off to Er Yong, a new message flashed across her communicator—Idol wanted her to save three pounds of Green Lantern tenderloin.

She replied instantly: Got it. I’ll deliver before noon.

When Idol wanted meat, Xia Qing always made it happen.

By the time she and Old Goat made it back to Wild Boar Valley, everything had changed: three adult wild boars now had the upper hand, and the six wolf pups were in real trouble.

Unlike the ever-relaxed Old Goat, Xia Qing’s heart was pounding with worry.

Two more minutes ticked by before the Alpha let out a commanding howl. Immediately, five adult wolves leaped into the valley, hauling the pups to safety. Gone was their earlier confidence—the pups collapsed on the ground, gasping, dirty and shaken.

Standing together nearby, Black Wolf and Lame Wolf guarded two gray pups and a black one. Only then did Xia Qing realize—they were a pair, and parents to three cubs.

The remaining two pups belonged to a scarred black she-wolf.

Meanwhile, the lone cub still battling three adult boars—a sturdy pup with golden eyes and gray-brown fur—was the Alpha’s own child!

Like its mother, this pup was a Speed Evolver. Facing attacks from all sides, it showed no fear, only looking for a chance to strike back.

But it was still too young—lacking strength and sharp teeth, killing a giant boar was out of reach for now. Still, it refused to give up, stubbornly fighting on.

Fourteen wolves and one young woman watched from above, focused on the uneven battle below.

Then, three minutes later, as its stamina faded, the pup finally found an opening—blinding a big boar in one eye!

It was the same boar that the pup and the other five had ambushed earlier—over seven hundred pounds of raging muscle.

Wounded and furious, the boar let out an earth-shaking roar.

But now with only one good eye, its fighting power dropped sharply.

Another three minutes passed, and the pup managed to blind the boar’s other eye too!

Now the beast was doomed. After crashing through a few trees, this mountain of meat finally collapsed.

As the cub dove in and clamped its jaws around the boar’s throat, the five remaining wolf pups bounded into the valley, surrounding the other two wild boars.

They’d learned from the leader—go for the eyes!
